The rules, as far as TikTok enforces rules: you and your partner feed two photos into an AI baby generator, you point the camera at yourselves, you reveal the child, and you try to keep a straight face. That's it. The video is thirty seconds long and the entire payload is the moment somebody fails.
Where the format came from
The lineage is documented even if the name isn't. By June 2023, Dexerto was covering the “future baby filter” trend — one TikToker famously ran her exes through it to rate compatibility. A month later the wave found its app: Remini's baby feature spread under #AIbabyfilter, and Business Insider reported parents saying the generated babies looked uncannily like their real kids. The #Remini hashtag sat at 1.4 billion views that July, and TechCrunch reported the app hitting the top of the US App Store on the back of it.

The straight-face variant is what the format evolved into once the novelty of the picture wore off. Honest disclosure: no major outlet has written up “AI baby straight face” as a named trend, and we looked. It lives in captions and audio remixes, the way most TikTok formats do. The data here is murky, so we're telling you the verified history and labeling the rest as what it is — a format people use, not a documented phenomenon.
Why the straight face is the point
A reaction video needs something worth reacting to, and an AI baby is a strangely loaded image. It's imagined, not predicted — no app can know what your child would look like — but it inherits exactly the features you'd notice: her eyes, his chin, a smile that belongs to both of you. Trying not to react to that is a game you lose by playing. The deadpan is a container for a real question — could I picture a future with this person? — and the crack in it is the answer arriving early.
